Gorilla Workshop 2008
Hosted by Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the Brevard Zoo
January 23rd – 27th 2008
Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the Brevard Zoo are proud to host the 2008
Gorilla Workshop. The workshop will be held at the Radisson WorldGate Resort in
Kissimmee Florida, January 23rd through January 27th 2008. Our keynote speakers
will include Mbeli Bai field researcher Thomas Breuer and Doug Cress of the Pan
African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA). We are currently working on a commitment
from our third keynote speaker, we will keep you posted. Your $195 registration
fee will cover many of your meals, coffee breaks, a conference t-shirt and
bag. In addition, $10 of each registration fee will be used to support in situ
conservation project(s).
Keynote Speakers
Thomas Breuer has been studying the social organization and behavior of
western gorillas for the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) at Mbeli
Bai, northern Congo since 2002. Mbeli Bai is a large forest clearing in
the Noubalalé-Ndoki National Park attracting more that 130 different
gorillas providing the most complete set of demographic data for this
species (on-going monitoring since 1995 at Mbeli Bai). Thomas has also
been leading the local conservation education program Club Ebobo in the
villages surrounding the park. Thomas has been working in several
countries in Central Africa since 1998 and is currently writing up his
results on sexual selection in western gorillas to obtain a PhD at the
Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Germany.
Doug Cress is the executive director of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance
(PASA), the organization of African wildlife refuges that collectively care for
over 725 chimpanzees, 85 gorillas, 55 bonobos, and approximately 2,000 other
endangered primates. Cress joined PASA in 2002, and manages the day-to-day
operations of the organization based in Portland, Oregon. Doug also serves as a
trustee of the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage in Zambia, one of the largest
sanctuaries in the world. Prior to joining PASA Doug served as the executive
director of the Great Ape Project (GAP) and spent twenty years as an award-winning
reporter for The Washington Post, the Atlanta Constitution, the Los Angeles
Daily News and Time.
History of the Gorilla Workshop
The Gorilla Workshop was first conceptualized and hosted by the Columbus Zoo
gorilla keepers (Beth Armstrong, Charlene Jendry, Adele Absi and Diana Frisch)
in 1990. The GW was a direct and natural off-shoot of the Gorilla Gazette, a
publication for and by gorilla keepers begun in 1987 by the Columbus Zoo
gorilla keepers. The intent of the Gorilla Workshop was to give voice to the unique
and specialized experiences of gorilla keepers in the hope of changing the
husbandry culture thereby improving the lives of captive gorillas. Subsequent
Gorilla Workshop hosts have included the Milwaukee County Zoo (1992), Pittsburgh
Zoo (1997) followed by the Calgary Zoo in 2004 and the Paignton Zoo in 2006.
Many changes and improvements have been made over the last 16 years and it is
our hope that the passion of those that care for gorillas on a daily basis
both in captivity and in the wild will continue to inspire each of us through the
Gorilla Workshop format. With that in mind we welcome and ask for your input
on topics that you feel are important for discussion. Thanks in advance for
your suggestions and we look forward to seeing each of you at the 2008 Gorilla
Workshop.
